Manaslu Circuit Trek in 2027: Best Season and Month Guide

The Manaslu Circuit is built for experienced walkers who want high Himalayan passes without the crowded teahouses of the Annapurna or Everest routes. If you prefer independent travel, dislike rigid permit rules, or expect luxury lodges every night, pick a different trail. But groups we take through in late November usually find the isolation and Tibetan-influenced culture worth every rupee.

The Manaslu Verdict

Choosing when to go dictates whether you cross Larke La safely or turn back at Bimthang due to knee-deep snow. The route wraps around Mount Manaslu at 8,163 meters, crossing the 5,106 m Larke La pass over 14 to 18 days. Weather windows matter here more than almost any other commercial route in Nepal.

Most trekkers ask us if the restricted area rules are worth the administrative hassle. They are, because the restrictions keep the trails remarkably quiet compared to neighboring valleys. You will sleep in simpler lodges, eat dal bhat by wood stoves, and walk past ancient mani walls that see very few visitors outside the peak months.

Autumn: October and November

Autumn is the undisputed peak season for the Manaslu Circuit. October follows the tail end of the monsoon rains, leaving the air washed clean and the lower terraced fields of Soti Khola and Deng a brilliant green. Daytime temperatures in Sama Gaon hover around 12 to 15 degrees Celsius, while nights at Samdo drop below freezing.

November brings colder days and freezing nights, but precipitation is rare and the visibility across the peaks of the Sringi and Manaslu ranges is exceptional. The crossing over Larke La is usually free of deep snow until late in the month. Teahouses operate at full capacity, so advance planning for room allocations in places like Dharmashala is necessary.

October and November offer the most reliable weather windows for Larke La, but you must book lodges early because capacity above Sama Gaon is strictly limited.

Spring: March to May

Spring offers a warmer alternative to autumn, starting with cold March days that gradually warm up by May. Rhododendron forests bloom in shades of red and pink as you ascend past Philim and Deng. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, though afternoon clouds often build up and block the summit views.

April is particularly popular for birdlife and blooming flora along the Budi Gandaki river gorge. By late May, pre-monsoon convective storms can bring afternoon rain and occasional hail at higher camps. Larke La remains clear in the mornings, but early starts are mandatory to beat the cloud cover.

Monsoon: June to August

Summer monsoon is generally a poor time for the Manaslu Circuit. Heavy rains saturate the lower trails from Maccha Khola up to Prok, triggering landslides and turning the dirt tracks into muddy tracks crawling with leeches. Rivers swell, and suspension bridges over raging torrents require careful footing.

And yet, the upper Tibetan-influenced villages like Sama Gaon and Samdo sit in a partial rain shadow behind the high peaks. If you accept wet conditions on the lower approach days, the upper valleys are remarkably peaceful and wildflowers blanket the alpine meadows near the base of the pass.

Winter: December to February

Winter brings sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow to Larke La, frequently closing the pass for days at a time. Samdo and Dharmashala experience bone-chilling cold, with overnight temperatures plunging below -15 degrees Celsius. Many high-altitude teahouses close down as local families move down-valley to warmer settlements.

Attempting the full circuit in January or February requires mountaineering experience, specialized cold-weather gear, and flexibility in your schedule. But if you have the time to wait out a snowstorm in Sama Gaon, you will have the entire trail to yourself.

Permits, Costs, and Rules

Regulations require every trekker on the Manaslu Circuit to travel with a licensed guide and a minimum of two clients in the permit group. You cannot legally obtain the Restricted Area Permit as a solo traveler. You also need the Manaslu Conservation Area Project permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit, since the route exits via the Annapurna side through Dharapani.
