You can hire a certified local guide independently at the airport gates in Lukla for roughly 25 to 30 USD per day, which keeps your money directly in the local community and saves you booking commissions.

What Your Budget Buys on the Trail

Your money on this trail goes toward basic mountain infrastructure. Lodging in Namche Bazaar has evolved significantly over the last decade. Standard rooms at places like the Himalayan Lodge or Khumbu Lodge offer wooden twin beds, thick blankets, and access to common areas heated by yak-dung stoves.

Food options are surprisingly diverse but become more expensive as you ascend. A plate of traditional Sherpa potato pancakes or a bowl of garlic soup (highly recommended for altitude adaptation) costs around 500 NPR in Phakding, but can rise to 900 NPR once you reach Tengboche. Dal Bhat, the lentil and rice staple, remains the most cost-effective meal because it includes free refills.

Always carry cash in Nepalese Rupees. There are functional ATMs in Namche Bazaar, but power outages and network failures are common. Do not rely on cards north of Lukla.

• Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Manthali (4 hours), fly to Lukla (2,860 m), and trek to Phakding (2,610 m). 3 hours walking.
• Day 2: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) crossing the high Hillary Suspension Bridge. 6 hours walking.
• Day 3: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar. Optional day hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for your first panoramic views. 3-4 hours walking.
• Day 4: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,867 m) via the scenic trail descending to Phunki Thenga. 5-6 hours walking.
• Day 5: Morning exploration of Tengboche Monastery, then trek back down to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m). 5 hours walking.
• Day 6: Trek from Namche Bazaar down to Phakding or Monjo (2,835 m). 5 hours walking.

Practical Logistics: Permits, Flights, and Pack Lists

You do not need to secure your trekking permits in Kathmandu before departure. The Khumbu region uses a localized permit system. You will purchase the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit for 2,000 NPR at the entry checkpoint in Lukla, and the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit for 3,000 NPR at the park gate in Monjo.

Flight logistics require careful attention. Due to air traffic congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, almost all flights to Lukla during the peak spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons depart from the small airport in Manthali (Ramechhap). This requires a 1:30 AM road departure from Kathmandu to catch the early morning flights.

For packing, focus on layering. Although you are not going to the extreme cold of Base Camp, temperatures in Tengboche can still drop to -5 degrees Celsius after sunset in October. Bring a high-loft down jacket, a windproof outer shell, sturdy broken-in trekking boots, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -10 degrees Celsius.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Khumbu

The most common mistake we see trekkers make is buying bottled water along the trail. This is not only expensive (up to 400 NPR per bottle near Tengboche) but also contributes to a massive plastic waste crisis in the national park. Carry a durable wide-mouth Nalgene bottle and use water purification tablets or a hollow-fiber filter system.

Another error is failing to build buffer days into your international travel plans. Lukla Airport is notorious for weather delays. High winds, low clouds, or sudden fog can ground all flights for days at a time. We recommend leaving at least two spare days in Kathmandu at the end of your trip before your international flight home.
